Best Time for Gorilla Trekking in Uganda

Gorilla trekking in Bwindi Impenetrable National Park is often described as life-changing. But timing your visit properly can elevate your experience from good to extraordinary.

Understanding Uganda’s Climate

Uganda has two main seasons:

1. Dry Seasons (Best Overall Time)
  • June to September
  • December to February

These months offer:

  • Less rainfall

  • Easier forest hiking

  • Better photography conditions

  • Clearer visibility

This is widely considered the best time for gorilla trekking in Uganda.

2. Wet Seasons (Lower Crowds & Lush Forests)
  • March to May
  • October to November

Advantages:

  • Fewer tourists

  • Greener landscapes

  • Easier permit availability

Disadvantage:

  • Trails can be slippery and challenging.

Gorilla Permit Information

  • Current permit cost: approx. $800 per person

  • Booking required months in advance

  • Only 8 visitors per gorilla family per day

Permits are issued by the Uganda Wildlife Authority.

What to Expect During the Trek

  • Briefing at 7:30 AM

  • Trek duration: 2–6 hours

  • 1 hour with the gorillas

  • Strict conservation guidelines

Standing meters away from a 200kg silverback is an indescribable moment.
